This headline just in: “Portland Loos Are Coming to San Diego.” The City Council on June 21 approved spending $700,000 to install seven public toilets around town for the homeless that will operate 24 hours a day year-round. City Councilman Carl DeMaio spearheaded the vote, and he got the idea from David “The Water Man” Ross, who hands out free bottled water to the homeless downtown, and the Girls Think Tank!, a nonprofit that passes out emergency backpacks for the homeless during the winter months.

Public meetings will be held to determine the best locations to place the toilets, which were pioneered in Portland, Ore. …
